Apple Watch Series 10 updates will include sleep apnea detection, digital keyboard

Apple officials have confirmed rumors that the Apple Watch Series 10 will come with a new sleep apnea detection feature.

The device does this by tracking breathing disturbances while you’re sleeping, then analyzing that data every 30 days to determine whether you may be suffering from this condition.

And with this new watch design, you’ll be able to type messages directly on the screen instead of relying on voice-to-text thanks to the addition of a digital keyboard.

Apple CEO Tim Cook tweets photo from Apple Park

We’re less than two hours away from the start of today’s event. CEO Tim Cook tweeted this photo from Apple Park in Cupertino.

X users are speculating that the image may be AI generated – perhaps to show off the capabilitites of Apple Intelligence.

Apple Store site is DOWN in anticipation of event

Apple typically takes its online store offline prior to a launch event so that it can prepare pages for its new products.

That means you can’t purchase any Apple products until the event ends later today. But today probably isn’t the best day to purchase a new iPhone or Apple device anyway.

Waiting until a few weeks after the launch gives you more time to determine whether the newest models are worth the pricetag, or if you would rather purchase a slightly older model for less money.

Update on virtual or augmented reality devices?

There’s no evidence to suggest that Apple will give an update on its Vision Pro, Apple Glasses or any new virtual or augmented reality devices today.

However, there has been some new leaked information about the Apple Glasses, which are expected to launch in 2027.

But we could have them, or a cheaper version of Vision pro, as early as 2025.

These lightweight AR spectacles will be different from the Vision Pro goggles in that they’re designed for everyday wear. They’re considered a direct competitor of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which launched in 2021.

The Apple Glasses are expected to launch with augmented reality and eye-scanning features, but little else is known about the functionality and design of this forthcoming product.

Potential surprise product debuts, including iPad mini 7

Apple could surprise us with a few unexpected device reveals during the event, including the iPad mini 7.

The iPad mini 6 came out in 2021, so this tablet is due for an upgrade.

The new mini is rumored to come with Apple Pencil Pro support, storage capacity and memory increases and a range of new color options.

Apple expected to unveil new Apple Watch and AirPods

In addition to the iPhone 16 lineup, new devices expected to launch at today’s event include the Apple Watch X and the AirPods 4.

Other devices that could launch today include the Apple Watch Ultra 3, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2, but these are less certain to appear.

The two models included in this new Apple Watch series are rumored to come with some exciting health-tracking features. That includes an updated heart rate and ECG sensor as well as an all-new sleep apnea detection feature.

Apple Watch could also be getting a makeover, with this new series expected to have a larger but slimmer screen design.

The new Airpods will likely offer improved sound quality over the AirPods 3, which came out in 2021. AirPods 4 will also be the first non-pro set to feature active noise cancellation, and will come with a new case with a built-in speaker.

A brief guide to Apple Intelligence: Apple’s very own AI platform

Apple is finally entering the AI race with the launch of Apple Intelligence.

The company has described the new software as a ‘personal intelligence system that puts powerful generative models right at the core of your iPhone, iPad and Mac.’

The new features packed into this platform include generative writing and image-making tools, the ability to create custom emojis (or Genmojis), and big improvements to Siri.

Apple’s foray into AI began with the introduction of their digital assistant, Siri, in 2011. But since then, the company has lagged behind competitors like Amazon and Google.

But with the launch of Apple Intelligence, the company is aiming to make its mark on the ‘conscious AI’ market.

iPhone 16 will support highly-anticipated AI features

iPhone 16 is Apple’s first phone lineup designed to support AI features.

At today’s event, the company is expected to unveil the standard 16 as well as the iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Each of these phones will be compatable with Apple Intelligence, Apple’s very own AI platform.

The iPhone 16 lineup won’t launch with Apple Intelligence right off the bat. While the new phones will become available for purchase today, the AI platform isn’t expected to roll out until the end of October, according to 9to5Mac.

iPhone 16 Pro

iOS 18 is expected to launch with a bunch of exciting new accessibilty features, including the ability to control your phone with just your eyes.

iPhone Eye Tracking will work on any iPhone that’s compatible with iOS 18. To enable this feature, go to Settings, tap Accessibility, swipe down and choose Eye Tracking and toggle it on.

Your phone will walk you through a brief calibration process so that it can learn to recognize your eye movements. Then, you will be able to navigate your screen, open apps and perform tasks inside apps all without ever touching your screen.

Doctors detect first EVER case of new deadly tick-borne virus that ‘buries itself in the brain’

A new tick-borne virus that can trigger deadly brain infections has been discovered in humans for the first time.

Officials believe the unidentified man, from China, got infected after he was bitten by ticks when visiting a park in Mongolia.

Dubbed wetland virus (WELV), tests have since shown it has now infected nearly two dozen people.

Spread by ticks and farm animals, the potentially fatal infection joins a long roster of diseases passed by tiny parasites, like Lyme disease and malaria.

It was first detected in the 61-year-old hospital patient while being treated in Jinzhou in 2019. But medics have only released the report this month.

His symptoms, which included a fever, headache, vomiting, poor appetite, and infected lymph nodes, developed five days after the visit and he was prescribed antibiotics.

It was only when they failed to subside that doctors realised the man was suffering a viral infection rather than a bacterial one.

Blood tests then identified a previously unknown orthonairovirus, a group of related viruses, many of which are transmitted by ticks.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), one better-known orthonairovirus, can prove fatal in up to 40 per cent of cases.

People become infected after contact with blood or tissue of infected livestock.

It can also spread between humans through bodily fluids or among hospital patients if medical equipment is not properly sterilised.

Following this discovery, researchers collected around 14,600 ticks across Northern China.

They found that five different tick species could carry the virus. But but the Haemaphysalis concinna tick was most common.

After testing hospital patients who had developed a similar fever to the unidentified 61-year-old, within a month of a tick bite, they found 20 were positive with the virus.

Those infected with WELV most commonly suffered dizziness, headaches, back pain, nausea and diarrhoea.

But tests also showed the virus could even cause tissue damage and blood clotting issues.

One WELV-infected patient slipped into a coma and showed a high level of white blood cells around the brain and spinal cord.

However all patients recovered after treatment and were discharged within four to 15 days, according to the researchers.

Lab experiments on mice later found WELV could cause severe, often fatal infections, affecting multiple organs including the brain and nervous system.

This suggests that while the virus may be mild in some cases, it could causes more severe health issues in more vulnerable patients.

Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine, the researchers said: ‘Taken together, these data suggest that a newly discovered orthonairovirus, WELV, is [pathogenic] to humans … and circulates among humans, ticks and various animals in northeastern China.

‘Improving surveillance and detection for emerging orthonairoviruses will allow a better understanding of the effect that these viruses have on human health.’

BREAKING NEWSJudge grants Bryan Kohberger’s request for trial change of venue in yet another blow to Idaho murder victims

The judge in Bryan Kohberger‘s Idaho murders trial has agreed to move the proceedings in yet another blow to the victims’ families.

Kohberger had asked for a change of venue, citing the impossibility of an impartial jury in the county where the murders happened.

His lawyers said he’d be ‘lynched’ if he ended up being acquitted in Latah County.

Judge John C. Judge has granted his request and it will now be up to the state’s Supreme Court to determine where the trial, scheduled for June, 2025, will take place.

The decision is the latest setback in the long drawn out proceedings.

The victims were brutally killed in November 2022.

The judge in Bryan Kohberger ‘s Idaho murders trial has agreed to move the proceedings in yet another blow to the victims’ families

Cops details his every move on the day of the killings, helped by surveillance footage of his car and cell site data from his phone. Kohberger allegedly staked out the property on twelve occasions before the murders

Idaho police said the four University of Idaho students were murdered in their sleep between 3am and 4am (Pictured: Victims Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Maddie Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and 20-year-old Ethan Chapin)

The Goncalves family had expressed their wish that the trial remained in Moscow.

‘I have total faith in the people of this community. They’re not biased. They’re gonna figure it out,’ Kaylee’s father Steve Goncalves told NewsNation.

In his decision, Judge Judge said ‘The Latah County courthouse itself poses significant issues for a trial of this length and magnitude.’

He also cited ‘extensive negative publicity surrounding Kohberger.’

Kohberger, a former criminal justice student at Washington State University, which is across the state line in Pullman, faces four counts of murder in the deaths of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves.

His defense team sought the change of venue, saying strong emotions in the close-knit community and constant news coverage will make it impossible to find an impartial jury in the small university town where the killings occurred.

Prosecutors argued that any problems with potential bias could be resolved by simply calling a larger pool of potential jurors and questioning them carefully.

Judge John C. Judge has granted Kohberger's request and it will now be up to the state's Supreme Court to determine where the trial, scheduled for June, 2025, will take place.

Judge John C. Judge has granted Kohberger’s request and it will now be up to the state’s Supreme Court to determine where the trial, scheduled for June, 2025, will take place.

‘The traumatized town of Moscow is understandably filled with deeply held prejudgments of guilt,’ Kohberger’s defense said in a filing, claiming that if he is freed residents would ‘burn the courthouse down – outrage would be a mild description.’

To bolster their arguments for a change of venue, the defense said they conducted a phone survey of residents that found over 98 percent were aware of the case, and 67 percent believed Kohberger is guilty.

They claimed that Latah County residents told pollsters that if Kohberger is not convicted, they ‘would probably find and kill him.’

‘There would likely be a riot and he wouldn’t last long outside because someone would do the good ole’ boy justice,’ another anonymous resident said, according to the defense.

In a legal filing, the defense claimed that ‘prospective jurors who have been exposed to prejudicial pretrial publicity enter the courtroom with case-specific knowledge gleaned from the media, social media, and discussions with friends, family members, and co-workers.’

Kohberger was taken into custody in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, a small town in the heart of the Poconos Mountains more than 2,000 miles from where the gruesome killings took place

‘Uncovering the full extent of jurors’ case-specific knowledge and opinions in high-profile cases can be extremely difficult,’ they said.

However, prosecutors countered that the ‘change of venue (is not) going to solve any of these problems.’

‘The state’s position on venue is that the case should be held here. It’s a Latah County case. We believe that we can select an appropriate panel of jurors from Latah County,’ Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson said at an earlier hearing.

The hearings on the trial’s venue have caused delays and infuriated the families of the victims, who have accused Kohberger and his attorneys of deploying repeated delaying tactics to try and postpone the trial.

The trial is currently scheduled for June 2025 but could well face being pushed back again, depending on any upcoming rulings sought by Kohberger’s attorneys.

Kohberger’s team brought in media monitoring expert Todd Murphy, who testified over the level of media exposure Latah County has received over the infamous slayings.

He testified that Latah County has received more exposure to the killings than Ada County, where the trial may have been moved to.

Murphy added that while national stories may continue to receive interest during the trial, pre-trial hearings such as this one often see a significant uptick in interest in local news.

Prosecutors maintained that any prejudgment among the jury pool could be mitigated through screening and widening the number of prospective jurors.

Latah County prosecutors say they intend to seek the death penalty if Kohberger is convicted over the four slayings.

Kohberger has maintained his innocence since his arrest in December 2022, over a month after the murders that shocked the nation – with his attorneys insisting they ‘absolutely believe’ he did not commit the crimes.

The month-long search for the alleged killer led to widespread media attention, with the families of the victims using the spotlight to condemn the proceedings against Kohberger.

In December 2023, the mother of victim Kaylee Goncalves said the ongoing process has been ‘gut wrenching.’

‘It’s gut-wrenching how slow everything has to go. Why does this have to be so drawn out?’ Kaylee’s mother Krisi said in an interview with KHQ.

‘It’s important, I get it, but there are facts, we have certain facts, we have certain knowledge. I can’t believe that this is how it works.’

Jets holdout Haason Redick – who’s already been fined over $5 million – to forfeit another $800,000 for missing opener against the 49ers

Jets linebacker Haason Redick is set to be fined nearly $800,000 for each game he misses as part of his current holdout.

Redick, who landed in New York on April 1 after being traded from the Eagles, has yet to play or even practice with his new squad as he seeks a new contract (his current deal expires after this season).

And that streak will continue on Monday night when the Jets begin their season at the 49ers, with Redick forfeiting $791,666 to be exact.

Redick, who was meant to make $14.25million this season, has already cost himself millions of dollars due to his absences from Jets activities over the spring and summer.

As noted by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he’s already been fined more than $5million – penalties that are mandated by the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

Haason Redick has yet to report to the Jets after being traded from the Eagles in April

Haason Redick has yet to report to the Jets after being traded from the Eagles in April

Redick is a two-time Pro Bowler and has topped 11 sacks in each of his last four seasons

The Jets believed they were bolstering their pass rush when they sent a 2026 conditional third-rounder to the Eagles for Redick, who has notched 50.5 over the last four seasons.

However, Redick has been MIA since the spring with no end currently in sight (he even issued a trade request last month, which the Jets said they will not honor).

Former Browns GM Mike Lombardi reported on Friday that Redick was set to report for his new team, but that did not come to fruition.

‘I’ll stand firm that when he gets here, we’re going to welcome him with open arms,’ head coach Robert Saleh said prior to the season opener.

‘We’re going to love him up and he’s going to be a part of this football team and he’s going to help us win a lot of football games. He’s gotta sort through the financial stuff, which is none of my business.’

Redick was seen at charity event in Jersey City last week, sparking speculation that he could soon return to the team.

Nonetheless, the otherwise-loaded Jets will take on the reigning NFC champion 49ers without him on Monday.

The 1985 adventure-comedy has reportedly been given the green light for a second instalment – almost 40 years after the original – with its original star-studded cast set to return.

But while some fans were delighted at the prospect, others couldn’t help but feel they should have left the film alone.

Sharing their thoughts on X, some Goonies enthusiasts were left raging at the thought, saying they would ‘hate’ to see a follow up.

Fans shared: ‘The Goonies is getting a sequel. I cannot express how much I hate this’; ‘God….. Not a Goonies Sequel now..’

The 1985 adventure-comedy has reportedly been given the green light for a second instalment - almost 40 years after the original - with its original star-studded cast set to return.

‘But the whole appeal of Goonies is a bunch of kids going on an adventure with a treasure map. It’s something we all imagined doing as kids. If it turns into a bunch of weird or overweight adults going back to get some hidden treasure to pay off their bills, it’ll lose its magic.’

‘I feel sick they are gonna stuff this up so bad. I’m 42 and have loved the goonies all my life. Even my kids…19…15…11 (and by 2026, my 3yo will be 5) will want to see this, so hopefully they just do it right.’

Meanwhile, some were delighted writing: ‘I have never been so ecstatic and pumped a 2nd Goonies movie !!!!!! Yesssssss’; ‘There’s going to be a Goonies sequel in the works wow should be epic just like the original’; ‘Is it true… Spielberg is making a follow up to The Goonies? Excellent if it is.’

The 1985 beloved adventure-comedy film was directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg.

And now the cast is set to make an iconic return as production for the sequel could reportedly start next summer, according to The Sun.

The second film, which has now been given the ‘green light’ for production, could hit cinemas as soon as 2026.

A source said: ‘The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time but it’s finally been given the green light to go ahead.’

They added: ‘The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027.

‘The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros’ know they have to get it totally right.’

Production teams acknowledge the possibilities of where to take the sequel are ‘endless’ and the team are already excited to get started as they was to ‘bring the magic of the film to a whole new audience’.

The film, written by Chris Columbus, has become a classic hallmark of ’80s cinema, known for its mix of action, humor, and heart.

The film follows a group of kids from the ‘Goon Docks’ neighborhood in Astoria, Oregon, who discover an old treasure map in the attic of one of their homes.

This map leads them on a thrilling quest to find the long-lost treasure of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate.

Along the way, they must outsmart a family of criminals, the Fratellis, who are also after the treasure.

Not only will the sequels be an iconic throwback for decades of fans, but it was also be a huge throwback for the cast as many of the original members are said to star.

The ManhattAnt

The ant Lasius emarginatus lives in many different places, if the countries of Europe count as “places.” But if we step outside Europe (as well as the connected neck of Asia where the ant also lives), its habitat suddenly becomes very small. In the Americas, we spotted it in just New York City. Smaller than that: We saw it just in Manhattan. In 2012, we noted its distribution as between 63rd and 76th streets in Manhattan, though it’s been expanding every year since then.

People in Manhattan dubbed it the ManhattAnt. Which prompts the question: “Wait, were there no ants in Manhattan before they discovered this one?” There were — dozens of species of ants — but people tended not to notice them since the bugs stayed in parks or otherwise at ground level. The ManhattAnt, in contrast, adapted to the borough’s verticality, making its way into apartments 25 stories high.

Lasius emarginatus

Apartment dwellers who previously felt very comfortable leaving bowls of cookie crumbs on every surface suddenly became aware of and embarrassed by the kind of slobs they are. But the ManhattAnt doesn’t really eat crumbs or other human foods. It just eats other bugs. That means there were always bugs in your high-rise, folks. Some bugs are just better at hiding.

The Stranded Squirrel

We don’t think the Grand Canyon existed six million years ago. But squirrels existed, including the Abert’s squirrel, which was named, of course, after some guy named Abert. Then the canyon popped into place, thank to the Colorado River flowing and the land moving around. After a few million years, some squirrels found themselves north of the canyon, while others found themselves south.

The south squirrels are the Abert squirrel and have a wide presence in the world, including in Mexico and in the Southwest of the U.S. The north squirrels, however, became their own species. They’re called Kaibab squirrels because they’re stuck on that bit north of the canyon, the Kaibab plateau.

Kaibab squirrel at Grand Canyon National Park North Rim

It can’t move north because the north is the desert. It can’t move south because the south is the canyon — and while it can physically descend that way easily enough, the climate in the canyon is just as inhospitable for this narrowly evolved squirrel as the desert is.

So, it’s trapped there. Luckily, it doesn’t want to go anywhere else, as far as we know. The Kaibab plateau has all the acorns and fruit it wants.

Hardy and Gautreau, who is a cheerleader for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints, have not shared how they met or fell in love.

The country singer rose to fame after winning season 17 of American Idol in 2019.

‘I was just 17 years old when I first tried out for American Idol, and at the time, I couldn’t have ever imagined where I was headed,’ Hardy wrote on Instagram in October 2022.

‘Since then, I’ve been able to tour across America, play for our troops in Asia and make new fans in Europe. I had to grow up quickly and I am still learning more about myself every day.’

He’s largely been out of the public eye since 2022 when he was arrested for putting a wire in his ex-girlfriend’s dorm room to spy on her at Louisiana State University.

The musician’s voice could allegedly be heard while the device was being planted, the papers claim.

At the time, an unnamed source told Louisiana news station WAFB that Hardy was accused of spying on a female LSU resident.
