Waffle House CEO Walt Ehmer dead aged 58

Walter G. ‘Walt’ Ehmer, the president and CEO of Waffle House, has died at 58 years old, the Atlanta Police Foundation announced.

He served on the foundation’s board of trustees and has been running the Atlanta-based breakfast chain since 2012.

‘Walt was a dedicated leader, tireless advocate for public safety, and an unwavering supporter of our mission to build a safer, stronger Atlanta,’ according to a statement from the police foundation.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens also released a statement following his death.

‘I am saddened to learn of the passing of Walt Ehmer, the CEO of Waffle House and a proud Georgia Tech alumnus. His leadership, dedication, and warmth touched the lives of many, both within the Waffle House family and beyond,’ Mayor Dickens said.

‘He leaves behind a remarkable legacy. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May they find comfort in his enduring impact and the lasting mark he made on so many.’

The circumstances of Ehmer’s death haven’t been released to the public yet.

Ehmer joined Waffle House in 1992 before quickly rising to senior leadership within the company, according to an interview he did this year with the Georgia Tech Alumni Association after winning its Joseph Mayo Pettit Alumni Distinguished Service Award.

The award honors alumni who have provided outstanding support to the Georgia Tech community and have become leaders in their careers.

According to that same interview, he became Waffle House’s president in 2006, then ascended to the CEO job six years later. He was named chairman of the board in 2022.

He also described his leadership style in a 2020 address to Georgia Tech students.

‘It would be easy for me to sit in my office all day and send a memo out, send out a video, but is that what the business needs? We have 45,000 employees — that’s over 2 million shifts a year that have to be staffed, have to be managed, where we have to treat customers right,’ he said.

‘We are one family,’ he added. ‘Everybody does the same thing, everybody wears one uniform. But uniquely, every restaurant is also its own family.’

Ehmer’s philosophy was put to the test during the COVID-19 pandemic, when lockdowns were destroying the revenue of restaurants large and small.

In response, Ehmer cut his own salary in half along with the rest of senior management to keep Waffle House afloat, Business Insider reported.

‘The stimulus helped a lot of restaurants and more importantly a lot of people early on,’ Ehmer said in November 2020. ‘But, what you can’t value enough is someone’s peace of mind and security that they have a job that they can count on.’

There are now more than 1,900 Waffle House locations across 25 states. The main draw is that all of them are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Ehmer was also lauded for his response to a young woman who was shot to death inside a Tennessee Waffle House back in 2018. He's seen here speaking about the tragedy at a press conference

He’s been described as an active member of the Atlanta community, serving on the boards of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the city’s police foundation and the Metro Atlanta Commerce.

Ehmer was also lauded for his response to a young woman who was shot to death inside a Tennessee Waffle House back in 2018.

DeEbony Groves, 21, was singing a gospel song when she died, Ehmer said at her funeral service.

‘We went and visited with the survivors, and they talked about the people who were in that restaurant before what happened happened, and specifically remembered your daughter,’ the CEO told the hundreds of mourners at the First Baptist Church in Gallatin, Tennessee.

He continued: ‘You will get through this because I know by watching this is a very strong, faith-filled community.’

Ehmer’s speech was met with applause and cheering and was embraced by friends and family at the funeral who took comfort in his words.

Fans call Miami police ‘racist’ after shocking video of Tyreek Hill being violently hit during traffic violation stop sparks outrage

Fans labeled the Miami Dade Police Department racist after Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained on his way to their season opener at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hill was a block away from Hard Rock Stadium when he was pulled over and handcuffed with his face down.

After a clip of a police officer seemingly charging at Hill and hitting him during his detention, X users immediately called them out on the excessive force used during what was labeled a ‘minor’ traffic offense.

‘Why they do him like that ??? that my question cause he black,’ one user wrote.

‘Racist cops tried to arrest Tyreek Hill,’ another added. ‘That’s some bulls***.’

‘@MiamiDadePD y’all got some explaining to do for the racist shit your cops pulled with Tyreek Hill this morning,’ a third wrote. ‘Clearly at least one of your officers thought he was an easy target as a black man with a nice car. Racist much? If there is no accountability then expect @CivilRights.’

A fourth fan chimed in and wrote: ‘Tyreek Hill is going to have monster game today after some racist cops arrested him before the Dolphins game today.’

DailyMail.com has contacted the Miami Dade Police Department for comment.

Despite the rough start to game day, Hill was released shortly after. The Dolphins later confirmed that he was safe and noted how several teammates stepped in to de-escalate the situation after seeing him in handcuffs.

‘Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support.

‘Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game.’

Despite the release, Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, described the incident as ‘heartbreaking’ and the police’s actions ‘completely unnecessary. Rosenhaus also revealed that their camp will take legal action.

‘I’m very distraught about it,’ he told Darlington on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown. ‘We’re going to have to look into it.’

The agent added that he was ‘just thankful Tyreek is OK’ and thanked the team for helping to de-escalate the situation.

Hill is entering his third season with the Dolphins after arriving from Kansas City in 2022. Cheetah made 119 catches for 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.

EXCLUSIVE162 US deaths linked to Ozempic and similar weight loss drugs – including 28-year-old who died from ‘intestinal mass’ and a pregnant woman, our analysis shows

Weight loss shots like Ozempic have been linked to 162 deaths in the US, DailyMail.com can reveal.

One of the victims was a 45-year-old woman who choked on her own vomit while on Mounjaro, a rival drug that works the same way.

Another involved a 23-year-old man who died from vomiting, nausea, and a rapid heart rate after taking Wegovy.

None of the deaths are proven to have been directly caused by the injections, but experts say the reports indicate cases where they’re suspected to have played a role.

The fatalities were logged in the FDA‘s FAERS database, which is used to monitor the safety of drugs after they are approved and on the market.

The above graph shows deaths linked to semaglutide and tirzepatide by year. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy while tirzepatide is used in drugs including Zepbound. Yellow is used for 2024 to indicate the data is incomplete

Deaths that mention weight-loss drugs have risen 40 percent over the last six months, when there were 117 deaths reported in the system.

The FAERS system also records adverse reactions to medications, or when someone suffers a reaction after taking a medication.

Reports can be submitted by nurses, doctors, manufacturers and patients themselves.

Like with deaths, the reports do not prove that a reaction was directly caused by a medication.

For example, someone could take a drug and then contract food poisoning, which triggers stomach problems.

The system has recorded 62,000 reactions to weight loss drugs containing semaglutide and tirzepatide like Ozempic and Mounjaro in the US since 2018.

The vast majority of these — 46,000 — were recorded after 2022, following a surge in use of the drug’s as more shots were approved.

Ozempic first became available in 2018, when it was approved for diabetics but often prescribed off-label for weight loss.

Its sister medication Wegovy, which uses slightly higher doses, was approved for weight loss in June 2021.

Eli Lilly’s medication Mounjaro — which uses tirzepatide — was approved for diabetics in May 2022, but was also used off-label to help patients lose weight.

And in November 2023, the company’s Zepbound was approved for weight loss patients.

About 1.7 percent of Americans — or 5.6million people — were prescribed a weight loss drug in 2023, according to a data analysis by healthcare company Epic Research.

This was up 40-fold from five years before, when they estimated only a few hundred thousand Americans were on the drug.

Surveys from this year suggest that six percent of US adults — or 15.5million people — have now tried a weight loss drug.

In FAERS, a total of 10,000 reactions were classified as ‘serious’, or where a patient was hospitalized or suffered from a life-threatening event.

Among the new cases reported in the past six months was a 30-year-old man on Ozempic who was hospitalized with pancreatitis — a serious diagnosis where the pancreas becomes inflamed and causes pain in the abdomen which some patients describe as being ‘worse than childbirth‘.

His case was reported in June but occurred in April last year.

And in another case that occurred in May this year, and was reported in June, a 49-year-old woman was hospitalized after suffering from mania and a surge in blood pressure while taking Ozempic.

In total, the FDA’s system has recorded 162 fatalities among people taking blockbuster weight loss drugs since 2018.

Of these, 94 were linked to semaglutide — the active drug in Ozempic and Wegovy.

And the other 68 were linked to tirzepatide, which is the drug used in the weight loss shots Mounjaro and Zepbound.

Out of the 64 deaths recorded in 2023, 30 were linked to semaglutide while 32 were linked to tirzepatide.

In 2023 and 2024, tirzepatide was linked to nearly twice as many adverse reactions as semaglutide, including a 48-year-old woman who suffered a serious bleed at the injection site and a 26-year-old man who said he had lower abdominal pain.

In 2023, there were 6,300 reactions linked to semaglutide compared to 15,500 linked to tirzepatide.

So far in 2024, there have been 4,710 reactions linked to semaglutide but 19,450 linked to tirzepatide.

Dr Adam Rubinstein, a plastic surgeon in Miami, Florida, said he was ‘surprised’ by the fatality figures — saying he rarely hears of significant complications in patients taking the medications.

‘The only significant complaint that I have heard of anecdotally is pancreatitis,’ he told DailyMail.com. ‘These figures are very surprising to me.’

He added: ‘Many of these probably have a fairly loose association with the medication because this number seems quite high.’

He also said it was possible that tirzepatide was causing more reactions than semaglutide because it was a ‘little more potent’ and is suggested to cause slightly greater weight loss.

‘If there is greater weight loss, then one would expect that side-effects would be greater,’ he said.

A woman in Pennsylvania came forward this week to reveal the near-death experience she suffered while on Ozempic.

Diabetic Juanita Gantt, 62, was faring well on the medicine for months until she suddenly collapsed at home and was found unconscious by her husband.

Doctors found part of her intestine had died due to a condition called ischemic colitis, requiring her colon to be removed. She later went into cardiac arrest.

The woman now has to use a drainage pouch — a bag used to collect waste from the intestines when the normal route is no longer functional — for the rest of her life when she goes to the bathroom, which she says she wouldn’t have needed if she had never taken Ozempic.

Nearly all the reports in FAERS have been submitted by the manufacturers, Novo Nordisk or Eli Lilly, who are obliged to report adverse events to the FDA. These are often reported to them by patients or healthcare workers.

The FDA said it does not comment on third-party evaluations in FAERS, such as those conducted by the media.

A spokeswoman for the agency added: ‘Shielding patients from unsafe, ineffective, and poor quality drugs is paramount in the FDA’s mission to promote and protect consumer health.

‘The FDA maintains robust post-market surveillance and risk evaluation programs for approved products to identify issues that did not appear during the product development process.

‘However, spontaneous adverse event reports are frequently missing complete information necessary for making a reasonable inference about whether there is a relationship between a product and an adverse event.’

The agency added: ‘Duplicate reports and heightened awareness of an event with a particular product may inflate the reported occurrence of an adverse event.’

In comparison to the 100 deaths linked to weight loss drugs every year, there are 16,000 attributed every 12 months to NSAIDS — non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat pain and inflammation such as ibuprofen and aspirin.

The FDA has previously warned that in rare cases Ozempic can cause an intestinal blockage, called ileus, because it slows the passage of food through the intestines.

This can cause them to rupture and spill their contents into the body, which can lead to sepsis and multiple organ failure if not treated quickly.

Many patients taking the drug are also obese, which puts them at a higher risk of suffering serious side effects from any complications caused by the drug.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s BFF Matt Damon had ‘long deep conversation’ amid divorce drama

Ben Affleck‘s best friend Matt Damon had a ‘long, deep conversation’ with Jennifer Lopez at the premiere afterparty for their new film Unstoppable, it is claimed.

Damon, 53, and Lopez, 55, proudly posed together at the premiere earlier that evening during the Toronto International Film Festival.

Affleck, 52, who co-produced the film with Damon, did not attend the star-studded event on Friday amid his ongoing divorce from Lopez.

Now Damon – who has reportedly been a major source of support for Affleck during the collapse of his marriage – is said to have had a 20-minute tête-à-tête with Lopez.

They were seen sharing a laugh at the afterparty, as well as having a more somber chat and even taking each other’s hands, a source informed People.

Her appearance comes just two and a half weeks after she filed for divorce on her and Affleck’s two-year wedding anniversary.

Despite navigating the end of her fourth marriage, a source told DailyMail.com that the Let’s Get Loud hitmaker was happy to ‘head to the Toronto Film Festival to promote this film because Unstoppable means a lot to her, she wants to support it.’

‘It is a true life story that is very inspirational and she is proud to be a part of it. Acting in the movie was a high point for her,’ the insider added.

‘The movie has been getting a lot of attention and Jennifer wants it to do the best it can. She is very professional and always works hard to give her movies their best opportunities.’

Instead, her director Halina Reijn read a statement from the actor, revealing that Nicole’s mother Janelle died while she was in Venice.

‘I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken. We love you all.’

‘So luckily yesterday, even though Omicron is raging through this country, we were able to take her into the gallery after hours and show her the Matisse exhibit, which coming from a mother who’s raised me in the arts, it was soothing balm. Matisse was soothing balm last night.’

Later in the interview, Nicole said she felt privileged to be able to see the world through her mother’s eyes, describing it as ‘so beneficial’.

‘I’m at the place where I’m being given the chance to view the world, because of how close we are, my mum is giving me the chance to view the world through an 81-year-old woman’s eyes,’ she explained.

‘That is so beneficial right now, because she’s so cognisant. She has every brain faculty available, so she hasn’t lost anything. She hasn’t lost any memory, which is fascinating, and she’s extremely bright.

‘She’s giving me access, because she’s also very direct and very honest, and so I’m getting access to the world through her eyes, my mother’s eyes, so therefore a part of me almost at 80.’

She added: ‘It’s her perspective, obviously. There’s many different 80-year-old perspectives, but it’s her perspective, and her particular path, but I’m drinking it in and learning.’

During Venice Film Festival, Nicole admitted she felt ‘vulnerable’ filming multiple scenes of masturbation, plus a depiction of a submissive/dominant relationship for the erotic new thriller.

Rising British star Harris Dickinson has a career-making turn as Samuel, the intern who intuits that his boss Kidman, the CEO of a tech firm, wants to be dominated.

Nicole has made nothing like it since the dream-like erotic thriller Eyes Wide Shut with then-husband Tom Cruise 25 years ago.

She said that an intimacy co-ordinator and closed set had been vital to conjuring the sex scenes which tell the story of her character’s existential crisis, resolved through a taboo-busting sexual odyssey.

The actress said: ‘I think this film is obviously yes about sex, but it’s about desire it’s about your inner thoughts, it’s about secrets, it’s about marriage, it’s about truth, power, consent.

‘This is one woman’s story and this is I hope a very liberating story. It’s told by a woman through her gaze. It’s Halina (Reijn’s) script, she wrote it and she directs and that made it unique, that suddenly I was going to be in the hands of a woman with this material. It was very dear to our shared instincts and very, very freeing.’

She added: ‘I don’t think there’s a judgement attached (about the character). It’s for each person to react to Romy and the way she behaves.

‘My connection to it is that I want to examine human beings, women, on screen, to explore what it means to be human in all the facets of that and the labyrinth of that.’

She said that she was: ‘exposed and vulnerable and frightened when it comes to giving it to the world’ but that her experience of making it had been: ‘delicate and intimate and very deep.’

She said: ‘I knew she wasn’t going to exploit me. However anyone interprets that, I didn’t feel exploited. I felt very much a part of that. There was enormous caretaking by all of us, we were all very gentle with each other and helped each other. It felt very authentic, protected and, at the same time, real.’

The Quinta La Fauna zoo remained closed as of Friday

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection said that it had received reports from residents who had spotted the tiger and provided locations, but it remains on the loose.

‘It should be noted that there are areas of dense vegetation in the surrounding area, which makes it difficult to capture the tiger,’ the agency said.

Aaron De La Cruz, who oversees the agency’s regional office in Reynosa, told local news outlets that the tiger took off running after it was noticed by witnesses.

Right now the animal has not had any intention of attacking anyone, but it is still a large animal that is scared,’ he said.

De La Cruz added that the zoo normally works with the agency to take in animals that need special care and that this was the first time that any had fled the site.

‘We are taking all necessary precautions to capture the tiger without endangering the population,’ he said.

The Quinta La Fauna zoo remained closed to visitors as of Friday.

Netflix’s The Perfect Couple has fans calling Nicole Kidman show ‘trash TV at its finest’ – as viewers binge entire series in less than 24 hours

Netflix has a new hit show on its hands with The Perfect Couple starring Nicole Kidman as fans have boasted binging the entire series in less than 24 hours.

The six-part show – based on the book by Elin Hilderbrand – centers around a lavish wedding that ends in disaster, with some already hailing it as the best thing on TV since The White Lotus and Big Little Lies.

‘Finished all of The Perfect Couple in less than 24 hours. It was so good,’ one enthused fan wrote on X, while another boasted: ‘I just binged The Perfect Couple and the plot twist is SO GOOD.’

The positive fan reaction flooded social media Thursday and Friday despite the show having only been available to stream for a day – with some genuinely loving the series, while others called it ‘trash TV at its finest.’

Another viewer praised it as being ‘bonkers in the best way.’

‘The Perfect Couple is pure, delicious trash TV at its finest! soapy drama, twists at every turn, and just the right amount of guilty pleasure fun,’ a TV fan wrote.

Some fans also poked fun at Australian star Kidman’s accent in it, saying: ‘the way nicole kidman’s accent in the perfect couple is american, british and australian all in one.’

Others praised the Oscar-winner for her famously quirky turns.

‘If Nicole Kidman is going to be attached to man in a project you best believe he is going to be hot, toxic, obsessive and useless all in one. The Perfect Couple on #Netflix hits all the bases. 10/10,’ a viewer posted.

While some critics have panned the show, some viewers have claimed that the reviews have missed the point – calling it a ‘glossy and campy treat.’

A watcher posted on X: ‘Many critics took “The Perfect Couple” too seriously. The fact that each episode of this whodunnit starts with the cast dancing to a Meghan Trainor song is already so unserious. “The Perfect Couple” is a glossy and campy treat.’

Meanwhile, the first handful of reviews have divided critics with some calling it ‘ludicrously good’ while others branding it ‘daft.’

The sole positive review thus far is from The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan, who compared the show to HBO‘s The White Lotus and Big Little Lies.

She praised the, ‘proper plot,’ and the, ‘carousel of suspects turns and reveals drop at perfectly spaced intervals.’

‘It may or may not have things to say about the haves and have-nots, the power of money to corrupt, as well as class consciousness, but it doesn’t have anything like the interest The White Lotus, say, took in such questions,’ she added.

The critic insists, ‘it’s almost impossible to resist bingeing the entirety of this classy detective drama set around a posh wedding in Nantucket.’

‘It’s a glorious, perfectly paced delight,’ she says, though the other critics have quite the opposite take.

The series could have been a piece of ‘biting satire,’ but, according to The Independent’s Nick Hilton, the show is as, ‘daft as it is derivative.’

Hilton claims that the irony of the show with this specific title is, ‘for all the beachfront properties, the designer dresses, and wedding cakes that could feed a small army, perfection is nowhere to be found.’

He adds, ‘The star wattage of the cast, and their creative bona fides, should be taken with a pinch of salt: this is a neat shot of unadulterated naffness.’

The show is adapted from the 2018 novel of the same name by Elin Hilderbrand, who has been dubbed, ‘queen of the beach reads’

EXCLUSIVESelling Sunset star Amanda Lynn breaks her silence on racist tweets as she fuels explosive season 8 feud with Chelsea Lazkani

In the run-up to the Netflix show’s new series, which launched on September 6, a clip exposed the real estate agent’s historic posts in which she re-tweeted comments featuring the n-word.

Amanda has since addressed the tweets, calling them a ‘brief lapse in judgement’ while also expressing ‘regret.’

‘She regrets the mistake, has learned from it, and is not racist.’

Ahead of the Selling Sunset season 8 launch, a viral TikTok video exposed the real estate agent's historic posts in which she re-tweeted comments featuring the n-word

Amanda was brought into Selling Sunset as a friend of Bre Tiesi and came bearing reports that Chelsea Lazkani’s husband Jeff Lazkani had been seen kissing a younger woman in a hotel lobby.

Days before the release of season eight, a TikTok video posted by the user stephwithdadeets circulated on social media showing screenshots of tweets which were seemingly published by Amanda in 2012 and 2013.

Two of the tweets feature a quote from another user who had used the n-word, while a third was a racist quote. Her profile is now private.

Explaining her findings, the TikTok user said in the video: ‘The newbie is Amanda Lynn. She’s also a real estate agent and she also has a racist past.

‘From the season eight trailer, it looks like Amanda Lynn is the one who goes to Bre [Tiesi] with the tea about Chelsea’s [Lazkani] husband.

‘Someone sent me these old tweets that are from Amanda Lynn. And Amanda Lynn has used the n-word multiple times.’

The TikTok video was reposted by Selling Sunset’s Chelsea, who subsequently claimed that Bre had teamed up with Amanda to ‘ruin her.’

‘Bre brought her racist friend on the show to try to ruin me,’ she alleged on X.

On X, Chelsea said Bre brought Amanda on the show ‘to try to ruin me’

‘Never met the Amanda girl a day in my life but her and Bre in her words wanted to “take me down.”

‘I took the scene because it was already a storyline. It was all premeditated, I just handled it the best way I could.’

The damning TikTok video was shared far and wide on social media where users accused Netflix of not carrying out thorough background checks on the cast.

Commenting on the clip on X, one user said: ‘New selling sunset cast member Amanda Lynn with racist tweets.

‘When we asked for drama we didn’t ask for bigotry. Jesus does production vets these new women.’

On Reddit, another posted: ‘I genuinely don’t understand why they keep making Selling Sunset such a horrible show cast wise.

‘Do they not see how much people dislike Selling The OC?! We don’t need a repeat.’

A third commented: ‘Genuine question – who in 2012 thought it was in any way acceptable to use the n-word? I sure as hell didn’t and NEVER have. People are absolute trash.’
